Page settings, columns and breaks

On the Layout tab, you decide how the page looks: the margins (1), the orientation (2), the paper size (3), columns (4) and breaks (5).

Margins

The margin is the white border around the text. Click Margins and choose Normal, Narrow, Medium or Wide. Under Custom margins, you can type in your own measurements in centimetres.

Portrait or landscape, and paper size

With Orientation, you choose Portrait or Landscape. Under Size, you choose the paper size. In most of Europe, this is almost always A4.

Text in columns

For a newsletter or flyer, you can put text into two or three columns, like in a newspaper. Select the text and choose the number under Columns. With Custom columns, you set the space between the columns and add a line between them.

Page breaks and section breaks

Do you want a new chapter to always start at the top of a page? Then don't use a series of blank lines, but a page break instead. Click Breaks and choose Insert page break, or press Ctrl + Enter.

The Breaks menu
Inserting a page break or section break

With a section break, you divide the document into parts that each have their own settings. This lets you put a single landscape page in a portrait document, or use columns for just part of the text.

Tip: want to see where page breaks, section breaks and spaces are? On the Home tab, click the button with the paragraph mark (Nonprinting characters).
